Films about overcoming adversity: Charles Crispin's choice of movies

Movies about overcoming adversity despite overwhelming odds appeal to the inner desire of people to do the same. Charles Crispin is no different. He is particularly fond of this classic plot and has this as the common factor in his list of favorite movies—whether they are action, adventure, or drama.

First off the bat is Remember the Titans, a film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Boaz Yakin. Starring Denzel Washington, the film is a dramatized account of racial tensions faced by a high school football team composed of both Black and White athletes.

Another one would be Freedom Writers, another movie based on true events. It follows the story of Erin Gruwell (played by Academy Award winner Hillary Swank) on her quest to save at-risk high school students through writing and tolerance.

Charles Crispin’s list doesn’t stop there, however, but among all these films, the common theme of overcoming adversity rings true. Once the President (and currently the Senior Vice President) of healthcare reinsurance giant Evergreen Re, Crispin applies a similar approach to dealing with challenges faced by his company on the market. He accepts that risk acceptance has a role in improving the company’s market share, in much the same way as the films’ characters overcome theirs in triumph.
